EGR System Cleaning

Subject: EGR
Bobby,
The OBD II scanner reads a "402" code on my 2002 Lincoln Towncar with a 4.6L engine. The technician said this code meant the EGR valve is letting too much exhaust gas by. Bobby, can I take it off and clean it? I'll do whatever you suggest.
Thank you!

Bill,
Remove the valve assembly, clean and also inspect the throttle body and the exhaust delivery tube for carbon build-up. If cleaning does not correct, you might consider replacing the valve with a new unit. The EGR System Service is part of our BG procedures, and it’s especially critical on a Ford engine. Visit my 10 Most Wanted Car Killers for more info. Ultimately, you'll want to discuss this with your local BG shop.
Best regards,
Bobby Likis
