Red or Green Coolant?

From: Adam
Subject: Coolant: what color?

Bobby,

I have a question about changing antifreeze. I have a 2004 GMC Sierra truck 1500 with the 5.3L engine and 44,000 miles. It currently has the DexCool antifreeze in it. I'd like to change it over to the green antifreeze. I realize that I have to get all the DexCool out. I have heard that the DexCool is causing some intake gaskets to blow once there are so many miles on the vehicle. Will the green antifreeze be any better or the same on keeping the engine cool? I have no warranty on the truck. I hope this will not be a problem.

Thank you, Bobby, for all your advice.

Adam,

Glad you reached out to me. It's best that you have a local service shop (independent or new car dealer) closely inspect for damage (where intake meets cylinder head - corrosion/growth of fungi/or unclear and distinct parting line between each) already done to your vehicle's cooling system. GM has had intake gasket problems.

While some auto techs may tell you that green coolant should not be used in your system, we know differently. At Car Clinic Service, it is our policy to exchange red for green during our coolant procedure. However, I strongly recommend you have this done by your local BG shop - with their coolant machine. Click here to locate a shop near you and click here to see my 10 Most Wanted Car Killers - great info that you should know about the other components of your vehicle.

Better news: If your Sierra has less than 50K miles, BG's 150K mile 7-Year Protection Plan is available to you, so ask about it when you're in the shop.

Best,
Bobby Likis
