Power Steering Maintenance

From: Barry
Subject: Power Steering Maintenance

Bobby,

How often should the power steering system be serviced? Is this a procedure that I can do at home?

Thanks,

Barry

Barry,

The procedure is very messy when done by draining the system via return hose into a pan. Also, you would need to raise the car so that no weight is on the suspension and turn pump slowly with starter. This is the old-fashioned way to do it correctly, which I do not recommend. It's "an accident waiting to happen" and fraught with complications.

The best method today – and one we use regularly at Car Clinic Service – is the BG machinery that exchanges the old, contaminated power steering fluid for new, fresh synthetic fluid. Go to www.bgfindashop.com to locate a shop near you.

Power steering systems should be serviced using BG equipment & chemistry at least every 30K miles or 36 months. Draw a sample of the power steering fluid, and it will tell you if it needs to be changed earlier.

Good luck,
Bobby Likis
